Thunderwolf Army List

Fancy a Thunderwolf cavalry army? I know I do! So, now that the new Thunderwolf models are on their way, let's see if we can come up with a fun, themed army for them.

Let's see, we'll need some Thunderwolf Lords, plenty of Thunderwolves, plenty of Fenrisian Wolves and it would probably be sensible to have some firepower to back it all up.

Here's a 1500pts army with nothing but Thunderwolf Cavalary and a two packs of Fenrisian Wolves for Troops.

1500pts Thunderwolf Army

Wolf Lord: 275pts
Thunderwolf, Runic armour, Wolf Claw, Storm Shield, Saga of the Warrior Born, Wolf tail talisman, 2 Fenrisian wolves.

Wolf Lord: 285pts
Thunderwolf, Runic armour, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Saga of the Bear, Wolf tail talisman, 2 Fenrisian wolves.

Wolf Lord: 230pts
Thunderwolf, Runic Armour, Frost blade, Saga of Majesty, Storm Shield, 2 Fenrisian wolves.

Canis Wolfborn: 205pts
Wolf Tooth Necklace, Wolf Tail Talisman, Two Wolf Claws, Thunderwolf, Saga of the Wolfkin, Wrath of the Savage, Lord of the Wolfkin, The Wolf King, 2 Fenrisian Wolves

15 Fenrisian Wolves: 120pts
15 Fenrisian Wolves: 120pts

Thunderwolf Cavalry: 235 points
4 Thunderwolf Cavalry, Thunder Hammer

The 4 Thunder Lords and their Fenrisian Wolves join with a pack of 15 Fenrisian Wolves and form the Death Star of the army. The second pack of Fenrisian Wolves goes out in front to give them a cover save. Meanwhile the pack of Thunderwolf Cavalry follow closely behind.

It's not subtle, but it's very pretty to look at!

You can always mix the Thunder Lords about between the Fenrisian Wolf packs and the Thunderwolf Cavalary if you like.

Obviously, the army cannot claim and objectives. But do we really care about that when there's killing to be done?

If you like themed armies and love cavalary charges, then no doubt you've already been thinking of a Thunderwolf army. And as we've discovered before, Thunder Lords are where it's at when it comes to the Space Wolves cavalry.

So by minimising troops and maximising our HQ choices, we should be able to wreak absolute carnage once we get into close combat. Obviously, this isn't going to win any Grand Tournaments, but it's themed and good fun. I think it comes to £180 to buy as well, which isn't too bad either.

Good luck out there and happy hunting!

Anybody else notice the new Arjac Rockfist model next to the Hive Tyrant in the image?

What is the point of the wolf lords and battle leader taking 2 wolves each when they are already in with 15 fen wolves? When fen wolves are taken as warfear independent characters can still be singled out in combat and wounds allocated to them in close combat can not be given to the fen wolves. What am I missing here. Thanks for the article. I love thunderwolves.

i think it was going for a 15 pack with th3 lord and 2 fen to become a 17 fen pack and lord. as wargear it allows you to sneak in 2 more models for a 18 man/wolf unit.

I think this list brings up a interesting question. While the Fenrisian Wolves can be taken as troops choices, does this override the other rule in their description that they can not claim objectives?

I was always under the belief that it did not, it merely let you take the wolves as troops if you still wanted to take other fast attack troops. I'd be curious as to how others interrupt the rules.

Nope, their rule is quite clear, Fenrisian Wolves cannot claim objectives 'under any circumstances' - so that means not when they can be taken as troops, not in planet strike if they are attackers etc. That rule is quite clearly intended for when they are troops, as they cannot claim normally as they are in the fast attack slot.

I presume it means they CAN contest objectives though (don't have my rulebook with me at the moment but I'm pretty sure they can)

All units can contest objectives, but no, the wolves can't hold them.

Good to see you posting again Adam!
I was actually curious to see what was your reaction, since you never believed GW would ever release TWs.

Personally I can't wait to fielda TW lord with a squad of 3

Aside from the big 15-wolf unit, why have a full unit of Fenrisian Wolves if they can't score objectives? Make that a min-sized unit and use the leftover points on more Thunderwolves IMO.

They are there to fill the compulsory troop choices, provide a cover save and bite bullets.

Don't forget that Canis makes them all better in close combat too.

Still, i wish they could have gotten the price down on the Fenwolves, 6 bucks a piece is a bit much. I may stick to chaos hound conversions at 3 bucks. In fact, the army you listed is over $500 including Canis. :(

@Peter Hewson

I chose not to include the Iron Priest for the simple reason that a single failed 2+ save on him would see the entire unit of him and his Cyberwolves all disappearing.

Have you got a better Thunderwolf list then?

Bear in mind I threw this together off the top of my head in about an hour thinking "hey, this would be cool".

If anyone expects to win Ard Boyz with this kind of themed list, they'll be very disappointed. lol.

Something that I am noticing is the sheer sense of gimme! I am seeing from some posters.

For a long time, Adam and the other authors penned down their thoughts and ideas, took the time to document and photograph things and upload them, etc. and all for a pretty modest 'wage' at best.

Yet the response seems to be "Why wasn't I entertained for these past few months? I deserve it!"

It is pretty obvious that a list without TROOPS isn't for hardcore competing [which is the style I prefer] yet the point has to be laboured over, as is a rules mistake?

It is like those fluff gamers who feel compelled to slander people who don't play their way as WAAC or Spammers. Cool?
'Let me tell you how you're doing it wrong, because you're somehow cheating/short-changing me or doing it wrong because I don't do it that way'. Mmhmm.

Apple should sell the iWant - we seem to have plenty of customers for it nowadays.

iWant made my day.

For me the list don't seem perfect and not my style of play, but it reminded me that Canis has a purpose i overlooked most often (cos i don't like him neither, in my eyes he's the weekest HQ choice and i'm not even fluffwise comfortable with him...):

Fenris wolves as troops - even worse than blood claws, but cheap to fill the have-to-2-Troops.
Fits wonderfull in an themed army made of the new wolves.

(Canis was great with a saving and the ability to field thunderwolves as troops... *dream*)

To quoth Adam; "hey, this would be cool".

A good, fun list centered on a real hairy Deathstar unit of gnashy teeth and claws. Would probably be a riot to play against friends.

I might give a smaller version of this list a go for pickup games, I don't think any other army can focus so much on cavalry choices.

Thanks for the catch on that. I swear I'd looked there before I posted, but I must have skimmed over that bit. Very poorly located on GW's part. Having restrictions on who can take a saga in two different places is kinda clunky.

@The Bear

I remain sad that Mogul Kamir doesn't unlock rough riders as troop choices for Imperial Guard. I could have a lot of fun with a build like that.

Hello readers,

The new thunderwolves cavalry and fenrisian wolves are worth the waiting.

The TWC list wouldn't be my kind of list. I think there should be one alpha male bad-ass leading the strike force and not four.

I would take 5xTWC and fill al the FA slots. I would take Canis to as my champion and for Fenrisian wolves as a troops choice.

Would it not be cool a al cavalry army running around with al wolves running around them. The wolves take the leftovers or keep the enemy busy till the cavalry arrives!

How can you have more than 2 HQ choices for this army?

Gentleman Jacq said...

The codex allows you to take up to two HQ choices for one FOC slot for a total of 4. The fluff is that space wolves armies are led by many great heroes.

Has anyone tried this army on the tabletop at all? I have been planning something similiar to this just for fun and wanted to know how it performs.

My toutnaments tend to run 2.5k so I have the room to make this list nasty. 3 full units of cav. 3 full units of fen wolves each led by a lord. 4 squads of 5 hunters with melta and plasmarazorback and some combimelt-plas wolfgaurd in a pod. 2 lone wolves round the list.
