Bjorn the Fell Handed tactics are fairly straightforward, because he's a badass venerable Dreadnought with a few extra rules. But more importantly than that, he's an HQ choice that encourages you to play in the midfield role which Space Wolves excel at.
I'll explain how and why Bjorn the Fell Handed works in this way, but first some background.
Bjorn is the oldest warrior in the Imperium, having fought alongside Russ during the Horus Heresy and babysitting Kasper Hawser (see Prospero Burns) before Russ had his vision, gathered his best warriors around him and left to pursue an unknown quest. Bjorn was left in charge and became the first Great Wolf before getting torn to shreds by 'a warp beast with a thousand maws' and interred into the sarcophagus of a Dreadnought.
Now Bjorn is a living relic from the Great Crusade who is awoken every Century to hold court at The Great Feast and recount elements of his own saga.
Equipment: Assault Cannon/Plasma Cannon/Twin Linked Lascannon, Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon (with Heavy Flamer), Wolf Tail Talisma, Smoke Launchers
Skills: Saga of Majesty, Venerable, Ancient Tactician, Ward of the Primarch, Living Relic
Using Venerable & Living Relic
If Bjorn suffers a glancing or penetrating hit, you can ask your opponent to reroll the damage result. However, you must accept the second roll. So it's important when to ask for that reroll. Some times it's worth Bjorn being immobilised than risk being destroyed. Similarly, it may be worth playing it safe and having a weapon torn off.
Other times you may want Bjorn to explode in an Objective based game. So you can encourage rerolls to try and get him killed and use his Living Relic rule to turn his wreckage into extra Objective on your side of the board. It's a bit cheesy, but what the heck!
Just be careful in an Annihilation mission, because if a friendly model isn't in contact with Bjorn when the game ends, you lose D3 Kill Points.
Remember that if Bjorn is destroyed all Space Wolves become Fearless for the rest of the game.
Custom Built Dreadnought
Stat wise, Bjorn is even better than a regular Space Wolves Venerable Dreadnought. His BS and WS are higher, he has 4 Attacks as standard and Armour 13 to the front. However, the only trade off is that he is Initiative 3, not 4. So you need to be careful who you get in to close combat with.
Choose Your Weapon
Bjorn has a choice of an Assault Cannon, Plasma Cannon or Twin Linked Lascannon which you have to pay extra points for.
Due to his high Ballistic Skill, there isn't much incentive to take a twin linked lascannon. Similarly, Assault Cannons aren't quite as devastating as they once were, which leads many people to equip Bjorn with a Plasma Cannon.
I feel that this is the perfect choice because it's pretty difficult to get a Plasma Cannon in the army as it is. Plus, the Space Wolves need all the high strength, low AP weaponry they can get to deal with enemy Space Marine Terminators. A highly accurate blast weapon is nothing to be sniffed at either!
CONCLUSION
Give Bjorn a Plasma Cannon, stick him in the centre of your formation, near the back and steadily advance, firing.
He's a great support character and with 4 Attacks basic, plus Armour 13 on the front, he's everything you could ever want from a Space Wolves Dreadnought, although he can't ride in a Drop Pod.
Sure, he's a glorified Dreadnought. One that's incredibly tough, great in a fight, great at long range, lets you reroll for the first turn and offers a couple of sneaky strategies thanks to his Living Relic ability. He has Saga of Majesty too, which I often forget to use, but it helps to stop any Space Wolves from running away.
Is he worth 270pts? Compared to how cost effective Rune Priests are, no. However, he does appeal to my personal sense of Space Wolves playing style, which is to inhabit the midfield.
Because Bjorn is an all-round fighter like Grey Hunters, he's ideal in the midfield. And even when he eventually explodes and drops an objective or could give away Kill Points, his proximity to the other midfield units generally makes this an unexpected plus.
So if you're fed up with fielding Rune Priests and don't feel that a Wolf Lord is a suitable investment for your points, then Bjorn is a surprising change to the HQ line up.

I often hear complaints of his lack of extra armor, something that tends to leave SW players stunned by its omission! lol.

I found that a decent tactic with Bjorn is to shoot for 2-3 turns, then charge something in CC that you wouldn't want your regular troops running into, like Assault Termies. Even if they have thunder hammers, I've had Bjorn last for an entire game in CC with a 10 man squad of terminators, kill them on turn 5, then turn and slaughter a melta command squad. around 700 points, killed, And he never took a single glancing or penetrating hit.

Would he be effective leading the front formation of 3 other Dreadnoughts?
One thing the Wolf have that others armies dont is the chance to put 4 dreads on the table...
What you guys think?

I think Blood Angels can trump that with a 6 Dread list, although they still wouldn't have the mighty Bjorn!

Have been contemplating running a list with Bjorn, primarily so that I have an excuse to buy the Forgeworld Venerable SW Dread haha. Would make a nice change from my usual list and never hurts to have a bit of variety in case of the occasional Apoc or campaign game.

I have never been seduced by dreadnoughts, too many times locked in an endless CC when they have been strategically charged by cannon fodder units...
Only Blood Angels Dreads can erase this kind of units in 1 turn...
The only time I could play Bjorn with pleasure was when I placed with him a huge unit of Wolf Guards in Terminators : 1 Assault Cannon, a second with also a Mark of Wulfen, and the rest with Storm Shield and ChainFists ...
Bjorn is unfortunately not an IC and can't join them, but that was 3 assault cannons anyway (2 targets), and when a unit (him or WG) were charged, the other came in support... (Without talking about counter-charge, or charging with both !)
This association was a real "steam-roller" : strength, shoot, saves, leadership...
And fear on the other player face !

Codex Marines can do a six dread list, throw in a Master of the Forge and Dreads are heavy support as well as elite.
Blood Angels can take up to 5 Death Company Dreadnoughts as troops (with the required number of 25+ Death Company) 3 Furiosos/Librarians and 3 normal Dreadnoughts in their heavy slot for a grand total of 11 (and zero scoring units).
Space Wolves are the second most limited Marine Chapter when it comes to Dreadnoughts, with a maximum of 4 (and one a special character).
Black Templars are limited to 3, but then as a Codex they're somewhat limited anyway and you'd probably take terminators in preference anyway.

@Duke of Earl
Templars might prefer termies, but being able to afford a venerable dreadnought for 125pts is a steal. That, and their venerable can be equipped with either Tank Hunter or Furious Charge.

I've been running Bjorn as the sole HQ in my "Bjorngard" army. I find that thanks to his ability to give you a better-than-even chance to pick your Long Fangs' firing positions at the start, and his ability to create an objective to be held by your (now Fearless) Grey Hunters, he's not overpriced at all. I advance him behind a screen of assault cannon razorbacks with an Iron Priest/Thralls in tow. When menaced by a BS4 Meltagun at point-blank range, Bjorn has less than a 7% chance of dying, compared to 16% for a Land Raider. Therefore, Bjorn's unlikely to fall to any single hit (and if he does, there's an upside, after all)--it's far likelier that he'll be nickled and dimed to death by a series of weapon destructions and immobilizations. The Iron Priest gives you something unique--an HQ unit that can regenerate damage as it goes--and he can assist in assaults or even act as bubble wrap for particularly nasty MCs.
It's not even for the sake of fluff, although the fluff is sound...this army has been in two tournaments so far, with second and first place finishes to show for it!

As of Imperial Armour Apocalypse 2nd edition, Lucius pattern Drop pods ( dreadnoughts only ) take up a fast attack slot in the FoC, so Bjorn can take a drop pod.

@ Anonymous:
Where does it say that Lucius pods are fast attack? The entry I see says dedicated transport...
I hope you're right, though, and I just haven't found the right part...Bjorn in a Lucius would be huge!
