I'm a little late on this due to flu dragging me down, but it's been interesting to see Adepticon following so closely after the UK 40K GT.
There's been a lot of discussion already about the Adepticon final, between Space Wolves and Imperial Guard. Many have cheered both players for running army lists which aren't the standard cut n' paste net spam.
That said, the Space Wolves list is very similar to what many brought to the UK 40K GT, while the Imperial Guard army...really isn't. So I'm not surprised that the Space Wolves player won the final. From the video, the Imperial Guard player doesn't seem to play too well either.
1850 points Space Wolves list that won Adepticon
5 Wolf Guard with Combi-Melta and Power Fist, 2 have Meltabombs
5 scouts with meltagun,
(X2) 8 Grey Hunters with meltagun and standard in Rhino
(X2) 7 Grey Hunters with melta gun and standard in Rhino
(x2) 5 Grey Hunters with flamer in a las/plas Razorback,
(x3) 5 Long Fangs with 4 missile launchers
As you can see, the list is very similar to the kind of stuff we run at the Space Wolves blog, with the omission of Land Speeders, the extra pack of Long Fangs and upgrading the Rune Priest to Njal Stormcaller.
He's also got a lot more Grey Hunters, but Adepticon is 100 more points than the games we usually play.
Essentially he's taken the meat and potatoes of the Space Wolves Codex and unsurprisingly, it works very well.
Having seen a few guys run three packs of Long Fangs at the UK 40K GT, I'm tempted to take any extra squad for a spin myself. Even if I do feel the need for more lascannons.
Njal Stormcaller needs some play testing too. Although I've never bothered with him much in the past due to his high points cost.
Anyway, you can see the video of the final round Here. The commentary is awful and difficult to hear. I'd recommend letting it load for a bit, then dragging through the time bar to play it at speed so you get a better idea of what's going on.
I've played against tough Imperial Guard armies at Open War and Botch with Space Wolves. You just have to accept that you're gonna get shot and do your best to hug cover. Which is exactly what the Space Wolves player does. He plays very well.
But what on earth was the Imperial Guard player doing? He feeds 3 of his tanks to the Space Wolves right at the start. He just keeps bringing stuff forward, right into the jaws of the Space Wolves army.
I dunno about you? But I'm fired up for more games of 40K!

I still believe njal to not be point effecient and will stick to that. I wont go into detail, but if someone wants to know why, please feel free to ask.
The guard army is not only a fairly strange, if not weak list, but the player clearly got very lucky to make the final with his "tactical" play. very strange indeed.

Vendettas coming on the table from reserve 6' and firing 3 lascannons..........yanks must get a shock when coming over here or playing at the ETC!

He didnt shoot, he moved on turn 1 dawn of war. However, So, turn 1, Tony moves that middle rhino already on the board before the rest of his army moved on at least 14 inches (pivot move then pivot again looks further than 12)! So two moves which should of been caught up on..but fair xD Also noticed he swaped his models around after mnoving them, so that his meltagunners at the front.
Really shocked his getting away with things like this!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who uses Njal. Shutting down other psykers on a 3+ and lord of tempest has won me several games.

You can see the video of the game from our site at www.theindependentcharacters.com
Both players basically went 7-0 to get to this point - so no one can say they don't know what they are doing. They were both great sports.

I wouldnt say its hating, It's more pointing out "advantage" play. Apart from a few things he played it right, but I'm suprised it wasn't called up. If I ever did a move like that my opponent would be straight onto me, not in a rude mannor but simply point out a move which has clearly given me an advantage and cheated my opponent.
Its great coverage and would love to see something like that in the UK. gratz none the less to Tony.

I agree that its great to have tournament battles covered in this way and helpful too! Its a great way to learn good tactics and grave errors of all the 40k armies a lot faster than when you just play.
Players could build up a video library of battles to brush up on opposing armies before a tournament too.
Really enjoyed skimming through that one. Cheers!

The pivot move is definitely not illegal. Many, many people use it just as he did.
Any chance we could get a turn-by-turn description of the battle. As awesome as the IC video was, I couldn't really follow the game.

In truth the pivot move was illegal, but here is not the place to discuss this. I have called out several people on this, most of them who troll the forums looking for loopholes in the rules, and once you show them the rule on page.57 of the BRB there's alot of "Oh, that's not what I read online". Anyway I'm not knocking either player they obviously both play very well or they wouldn't have gotten where they were. Congrats to both!

This is the simple difference between the way the game is played in the US and UK. Generally speaking we tend to me more relaxed on movement and facing. If the move is patently egregious, moving over max distance for example, it will be called out. It's a Yank thing we want to win by blowing our opponents to bits rather than with a technicality.

p.gamer, I'm confused. When would you be 'more relaxed on movement and facing'? Could you give an example of when an opponent moves too far and you let it slide and why?
Do you also allow people to swap models around in a squad to get their melta guns closer to their target?
Thanks
Adam

'Look! Its a lady in a state of undress!'
'Right, 5 inches so... double dice'
Works well :D
I think we see the future in the IC cast - all we need is a way to see the dice or have them called out for us

Adam I don't see how the space wolves player had a non standard list. Over here I am pretty sure every space wolf player starts with as many units of long fangs as they can have always three and all with missile launchers. That is then followed with grey hunters with melta guns in either rhinos or razorbacks especially las/plas razorbacks and then maybe t wolves and lords or more grey hunters and priests. His list looked like the majority of all other lists. I really wanted to play wolves when they came out but now everyone over here plays them, I just can't bring myself too. I run the house league/ monthly tourney for AWC who runs Adepticon and usually out of 24 to 32 players a third are wolves.....

Everyone will be playing Grey Knights soon, so I wouldn't worry about it ;)

The mission that was being played had each player deploy 3 tactical markers in their half of the table. This was used for 2 of the 3 victory conditions. The first being that you control more tactical markers in your half of the table than your opponent. The second being that you control more tactical markers in your opponents half than your opponent. The third was straight up Annihilation. The winner was who ever achieved the most victory conditions.
With this in mind you can see why the IG player was pushing towards the Space Wolves side of the table as it can help achieve two of the the victory conditions.
They each played a solid tactical game in the end and deserve the recognition for it. Remember hind sight is 20 20.

Yes in our competitive regional tournaments which I usually finish near the top of with my wolves I have allowed people to re-arrange their deployments out of vehicles when they mistakenly placed a special weapon down on the table. As long as the end result of the disembarkation was legal within the rules. I can't say this is the same for everywhere but my personal experience is other players will allow a similar type of correct without a fuss.

Although Njal is expensive and fragile I'm going to work power armour Njal into my wolf list.
3+ dispel is the main thing. A 67% chance of nerfing Grey Knights is not to be sniffed at.
His toolbox of powers, plus lord of tempests, makes him flexible.
He's only marginally more expensive than two Rune Priests. I think I can live with that.
My Long Fang packs are going to be twin lascannon, triple missiles though. Too many 2+ saves around (and Knights will make it worse).

We're working on this now actually =)
Expect good things soon!

we play 2000pt games here and Najl is a must! he may not be the most point efficient but his abilities far outweigh the con to running him
