Here's the complete Grey Knights rumours summary with all the essential stuff you need to know about the new Grey Knights Codex.I think the Space Wolves will be staying out of close combat.
In truth, I think Every Army in the game will stay out of close combat with this madness and las/plas/melta and blast the Grey Knights to death instead.
But the important thing to remember is that they're not unbeatable.
They're still Marines and they still go down screaming to massed firepower and low AP weapons, which 5th edition has by the bucket load.
For more talk about how to beat them, skip to the end. Otherwise read on for the essential rules.
Grey Knights Rules:
Nemesis Force Sword: +1 to existing invulnerable saves.
Nemesis Force Halberd: +2 initiative (yes, this makes them I6!)
Nemesis Force Stave: Grants a 2+ invulnerable save versus close combat wounds.
All NFWs have Daemonbane: ignoring eternal warrior for daemons and psykers.
Brotherhood Banner: 25 points +1 attack to all models in the unit, and automatically pass force weapon pyschic tests.
Psybolt Ammo: gives +1 Strength to Stormbolters,Hurricane bolters,Heavy bolters, Auto Cannons and Assault cannons. (not worth +20pts even on a maxed out Storm Raven)
Psycannon: S7 AP4 Assault 2, Heavy 4, Rending.
Heavy Psycannon: S7 AP4 Large Blast, Rending.
Heavy Incinerator: Operates like the Hellhound's Inferno cannon.
Nemesis Greatsword: S:6 allowing rerolls to hit and wound.
DK Daemonhammer: S:10 Thunderhammer.
Psilencer: R:24" S:4 AP- Heavy 6 Gatling Psilencer has the same stats excepts it's Heavy 12. Psilencers always wounds Daemons on a roll of a 4+ unless the score required to wound would normally be less.

THOUGHTS
I've been going through the Grey Knights leaked Codex with Marc for the past few weeks, helping him to create the best possible army.
Marc has played Grey Knights since the start of 4th edition. He's suffered during that time. More than I have with my Tau. But now he looks set to unleash all manner of awesome upon us.
We've been giving units a mixture of swords, halberds and hammers for wound allocation. But halberds have become the weapon of choice purely for striking at Initiative 6 before anyone else. Even Eldar!
The point is that you don't want to charge Grey Knights in close combat.
In fact, just forget about close combat altogether. You're going to get hit by so many power weapons before you even attack that your unit will be decimated.
Just shoot the Grey Knights. Shoot them lots. Remember that under that nemesis force weapon and gauntlet mounted storm bolter is a Space Marine.
Grey Knights are Space Marines and when shot at, they die like Space Marines.
Question is how much firepower can you bring to bear? My Space Wolves can lay down a heck of a lot.
In fact, last week Marc borrowed my Space Wolves for a game and didn't get into close combat once! He just shot everything up close, en masse and wiped out a unit at a time.
So really, there's not much to worry about. Apart from Psycannons...
I'd best get back to my las/plas Razorback conversions.

All I can say is that Dreadknight is amazing, and I think the Thunderhammer is a nice touch too.
I think the paintjob is a bit meh though, I expected tonnes of scrollwork and inscriptions!
Cheers for the rundown again Adam!

I'd say that in creating a list where the only option is shooting the bejeezus out of them, they've basically turned every game involving them into something aking to playing against a Guard gun line (in other words, something dull). By trying to make "the best of the best of the best! ... SIR!" they've overshot the target. Considerably, because now all you can do is employ boring tactics to beat them.
Looks like I'll have to go get me some long fangs after all, which is sad. It will be interesting to see how they actually play on the table, though. Maybe it's not as bad as it seems...

The Dreadknight looks like a baby being carried in a baby pouch. AND he's all like "Okay, who just cast the Hemorrhoids psychic power on me? Not cool, Battle-Brothers. Not. Cool."

that Dreadknight looks just as poo as expected. i only wish it had stayed blurry!
seriously, why make up such an awesome concept and then make a model lacking in any form of dynamism. its just... standing there...! not to mention the fact that it doesnt really look that well sculpted. the placement of the joints and the way the arms are so much smaller than the legs just makes it look bottom heavy.
on a lighter note, the squad models are simply fantastic. couldnt have asked for a more dynamic and customisable kit (not that we won't pay for it)

Two things spring to mind.... Gundam and that stupid Matrix Film with the battle suit things in. Both of which I think are complete dog s**t.

Its different. Its ugly and it isnt some kind of rip off of any model they have done before.
I LIKE IT!

Plus - Adman 20 points for the whole vehicles guns to make it +1 S? S6 heavy bolters? S8 autocannons? bye bye FNP from 2 races! S5 hurricane bolters could also be a tasty upgrade.

True, but it's not like GKs are struggling for anti-troop firewpower.

I'm loving how some people are freaked out by all the upgrades but they seem to forget that they have to be paid for, which means less grunts. Scary grunts.
Eldar and Wolves are arguably the best-placed armies at locking down their powers and Force Weapons so I'm not worried too much about that.
I've played a few games with the leaked Codex and I'm more worried about the Henchman/GK build than I am Paladins/Toys or other small elite builds. 5 guys with Meltas in Chimeras and Crusader/Banisher combat units are dirt cheap for what they do and become scoring with Coteaz.
Sure, each unit will be scary but when we have 2 units for every 1 of theirs we can afford to sacrifice one as bait so another can get the drop on them. Every unit they lose will be a big loss compared to ours.

True, but once the GK players figure out that they don't need all the upgrades, then we're gonna have a harder time of things.
But they are beatable. They're just going to be a bit tougher to beat.
Anyway, I'm still waiting for a photo of the Jokaero miniature. I always wanted one.
I'm also considering the Jokaero army for a bit of a laugh.

I like the Knights. I like the Terminators.
I don't like the Dreadknight much.
Legs way too long, arms way too short (how does he hit something smaller than "him" with that hammer - giraffe-style??).
Feet too much Tau-like.
Put perhaps if you'ld place some dreadlegs underneath, you could have an awesome model...
I don't worry about them game-wise : for me they're just as tough as all the rest
:-)
As an afterthought:
It seems to me GW likes GI Joe-toys way too much lately, both in look and game-wise. i.e. Stormraven?

On the other hand, I think the models themselves could be the basis for some interesting conversions - I'm looking at the Terminators for my Rune Priest and a combination of the standard Dreadnaught and Dreadknight for my SW Dreadnaught...
Halberds / spears from the Knights and Termies will also go better with my Viking themed SW army as most historical Vikings were armed with spear or sword, not axe.

Unless your nids. Then your boned.

I gotta tell ya I think some units will be able to hang with these guys in HTH. I am gonna wait on the Dex and compare it to the leaked one obviously but to say just shoot them is a little premature. Not every army is gonna be able to do that.
If you build an army to do just that then limit yourself in other areas.
I for one am looking forward to the conversions and stuff. Lots of cool new bits to play around with. I'll put my wolves up against anyone. Bring the Pain

Finally, an army that I can use all my plasma guns on.
March 9, 2011 at 9:50 PM
I know this is a space wolf blog and I am a devout SW player but With all the swords and halberds in the new GK plastic kits as well as a tacti squad then you could make some cool Templar conversions I espcially like the two handed wepons for a running character with a strom bolter it would be epic

Lets just say my wolf wing is feeling a tad sheepish. Lets hope thunderwolves will be able to save the day......

Thunder Cats save the day...
Thunder Wolves tend to rip the throat of the day and send it back to Titan!

I play both Grey Knights and Space Wolves myself so I know the strengths and weaknesses of both armies. In combat Grey Knights will own almost anything, especially if equipped with halberds, but they get creamed when it comes to firefights. They just do not have the numbers to stand up to protracted exchanges of firepower.
