I'm a bit jealous of all the talk about the 40k GT in a couple of weeks because I was a bit lazy and ended up missing out on a ticket, doh! Putting that aside I am attending the Open War tourney in April so I do have something to look forward to. Anyway here is the list I would have taken to the GT and will probably end up taking to Open War.

I'll talk through a couple of my units and why I have been running them. Firstly I have gone with my Standard Grey Hunter set up. A pack of 8 with a fist toting Wolf Guard, Wulfen, Melta and Banner. I don't care what other people think but in my opinion this is the best set up for your Grey Hunter Packs. The unit doesn't break the bank points wise and has the punch and stamina to do a number of battle field roles which is what I love the most about them. A good Wulfen roll will change the course of a combat coupled with the guaranteed wounds from the fist it means I can usually beat any other MEQ squad. The trick is of course is that you will never just be fighting one of my packs, they work together and assault with multiple packs.
I decided to run a 5 man Pack on foot with a Flamer and a banner. I made this decision after talking to Alex about the unit. The difference is that Alex is running a Wolf Guard with a Cyclone Missile Launcher with his unit for some extra long range firepower. I've decided to go with just the 5 Grey Hunters for a couple of reasons. Firstly I didn't want to pump points into more Wolf Guard I need those points elsewhere. Secondly I can mount this unit into an empty Long Fang Razorback if need be and they can join the main assault but primarily they are an objective holding unit.
Next I want to talk a little bit about Lone Wolves because I feel it is a unit that has had little love from the Space Wolves Blog. I've run these guys about 5 or 6 times now and all I can say is Wowza! what the hell have I been doing not running these boys before.
I went for the popular set up of Terminator Armour, Chainfist and Storm Shield. An alternative to this is to take a Thunderhammer instead of a Chainfist but for me the fist wins every time being able to effectively deal with Walkers and AV14.When it comes to using these guys one word springs to mind .... LINESMEN!! The Lone Wolf is not fast enough to be a full on assault unit so forget about him running around causing mayhem on his own it just wont work. What these guys do is hold ground and scare the bejesus out of folk. I run two because I like to run things in pairs for redundancy and for the simple reason that a tag team of these bad boys is hard to avoid.
In a mech list such as mine I run the Lone Wolves as support for the Grey Hunters, if spaced around 12" apart they can pretty much hold the line and throw their weight where needed. If I'm playing defensively I'll run them out front and hope they take the brunt of the assault, they are tough enough to take any unit on head first and survive. If they don't survive who cares? They have achieved their goal of a glorious death and now the enemy can be counter assaulted by the rest of the wolf army.
Against a shooty army I'll just advance and run these boys towards the enemy. My opponent now has two choices, he can either divert a crap ton of firepower into the Lone Wolves or ignore them and risk the chance of being fisted to death in the closing turns of the game. I do admit they are slow but my army is not built around speed its built to give you the mother of all Counter Attacks while smacking you round the side of the head with long range fire power.
Has anyone else found love for the Lone ones like I have? Let your voices be heard brothers and unleash fearless beserkery death on your enemies.
PS Kudos to anyone who paints their Lone Wolves hair Slayer Orange or gives them some Legion of Doom face paint!

Care to elaborate mister annonymous?

Lone wolves are one of my favorite units fluff wise and as staed in this article can be a real handful. After having tried several loadouts of wargear the chainfist and stormshield are probably the most effective choice. However I never use the chainfist, because as far as modeling goes I always equip mine with a thunderhammer instead, it just looks so much better imho. I've also modeled a small tabbard hanging from his shoulder guard with the names of his fallen pack brothers to add a little more character.

I love lone wolves, as you say I run a pair of them and scare the crap out of enemies. some games they simply soak up an ton of firepower (which is great) other games they literally rip the enemy a new one!
Just ask a friend of mine who plays tau his opinion of them after the game in which they effectively tabled him on their own (taking out 2 hammerheads, 2 firewarrior squads, a crisis suit squad and another crisis suit squad with HQ attached) One of them died eventually but he had more than fulfilled his oath, the other survived and earned his place in y wolfguard.

Two are nice and three can be nicer though in this list I can't see you wanting to drop your WG. I'll be taking a couple this weekend in a 2k tourney. Give us some Batreps and let us know you do.

@ Anonymous - No they don't suck! and my dad is bigger than yours.
@Patrick - I'd love to add a third Lone Wolf, if only I had a fourth elite slot ;)
Otherwise the 5th Grey Hunter pack stays put for now. They came in handy in my last game where I had to contest a table quarter with more troop choices than the enemy.
It stopped my opponent sending a sneaky vet unit into that table quarter in the closing turns of the game.

I recently had a lone wolf tank Kharn the Betrayer......that was the only time I've ever used one, but I may want to give them a shot in my list. The problem I see is maybe them not dying.
March 23, 2011 at 4:19 PM
@Krablauch that is a risk with them, the answer I've found is to play them insanely aggressively (as fluff says they should) that way they will either get gunned down (saving your army from enemy fire) or get into glorious close combat and melt faces.

loving the use of lone wolf's here, there are underestimated alot of the time... if they dont deal with them they will get in and do some damage b4 falling if they do get shot at they soak up some of the firepower leaving the rest of the army to move more freely. Either way you look at it lone wolf's have a place.
Also i find a couple of wolves help them stay alive a bit longer to get across the field.
Good list btw.

A very nice list Brad :D
Agree that the lone wolves are awesome. I like them as they deal with Big bad mephiston pretty well :D (who we see a lot of recently! Even more than Eldrad)
On a side note mate, The reserve list is looking a bit barren for the GT so Im sure you could get yourself a ticket and be the 4th Wolf lord in the pack!
Its going to be awesome :D

Its too late now mate I put my name down for some overtime at work (bloody Tories haven't taken it all away just yet) or I would have come down. I'm gonna try and pop down on Saturday afternoon for an hour if I can get chance.

I've recently started kitting my Lone Wolf with TDA and twin Wolf Claws and man, he rocks. By the time he makes it to the front line I've usually blown up target unit's transport and Wolvie makes a bloody mess of it. It's definitely not as versatile as a TH or CF and SS, but works very well against infantry or (jet-)bikes.
March 23, 2011 at 6:10 PM
I run mine with a thunder hammer, combi-melta and a pair of wolves to provide some of the survivability in the absence of a storm shield. He usually makes a wonderful mess of things.

The only thing that annoys me about lone wolves is they take up an ENTIRE elites slot with 1 model (unless you take wolves of course). With our veteran sergeants taking up another elites slot just to be a little more annoying.
Lucky our troops rock! :D

How about:
Drop the lasplas backs for the Fangs.
Give them Rhinos
save 75pts.
Then buy another Speeder.
That way you can hop the Lone Wolves into the Rhinos, and haul into the fray....
^^,
Thoughts?
March 24, 2011 at 4:35 AM
Lone wolves in DTA will never fit into neither Rhinos nor Razors ;)
a little offtop:
Are the Eye of Terror 13th Company armylist and rules still actual and are they worthy of considering other than in a fluff army?
E.g. is a Wulfen pack a considerable force?
March 24, 2011 at 5:28 AM
That would have to be led by logan grimnar. WG as troops - all with the MOTW upgrade. Some more rending twc... a touch of rending assault cannons... It could be fun :D
March 24, 2011 at 5:46 AM
Oopsy.
Well, I meant without Termie armour.... *looks nervous*
lol.
It is probably a bad move anyway. Lasplas is bringing the most ap2 to the list.
2+ saves are horrid on Trygons [or whichever beastie has a 2+ save] and whilst you might torrent Hammernators, bolters just don't cut it with t6.
March 24, 2011 at 6:47 AM
2 MJayC50
all with MotW?
Would that make them a bunch of one-man troops? Only one WG may take MotW, isn't that?
And I quiete didn't get the thing about rending assault cannons.
March 24, 2011 at 8:46 AM
Aeteros - my bad, I thought that it was open to all in the squad (that would have been pretty cool) its one per squad. :-( no wonder its not been done :D
Assault cannons rend - I was just trying to get as many rending weapons and models as possible. Without WG rend'o' squads it would be pretty naff. Panic over.
March 24, 2011 at 9:06 AM
For a rending storm I still consider having 10 sniper-scouts =)
And of the Wulfen I'm up to playing my wolves as 13-th company from time to time. Bought some vampire's ghouls today to convert them to werewolves. And after that thought of their potential effectiveness apart from visual side)
March 25, 2011 at 7:27 AM
Hmm, I'd still rather have additional land speeders or close combat scouts than the Lone Wolves, they're just too slow for my liking. I'd be interested to know how many die to massed infantry fire before they get into combat (although I guess at least that diverts attention but a land speeder does the same thing and is more survivable). Kudus for trying something different though
