Toy Soldier 2010

9:39 AM by Bradimus Prime ·
Once again the cargo bays of the Strike Cruiser "Skoda Octavia" ring with the sound of Iron Priests and Thralls preparing the war machines of Task Force Jorgmundr for war yet again!

This weekend I will be attending the Warhammer 40k 1750 point tournament at the Toy Soldier event at Preston University. The event takes place every year and the tournament is run by the Coppull and Chorley Knights wargames club otherwise known as C.A.C.K.

From what I've heard this is one of the more popular non GW events in the country and some of the top players like to attend, all I can say is I'm in for a good fight. This time round I've taken a different approach to my list adding in some Close Combat wallop in the form of two Thunder Wolf mounted Wolf Lords! The Twins as I have come to call them add some much needed support to my list as I found last time round I tended to be dominated by assault units and had to rely on my Powerfists to do any damage. This was fine but my Grey Hunters took heavy casualties in the process, anyway here is my 1750 list:-

HQ

Wolf Lord
Thunderwolf Mount
Thunder Hammer
Storm Shield
Runic Armour
Wolf Tooth Necklace
Wolf Tail Talisman
Saga of the Bear

Wolf Lord
Thunderwolf Mount
Wolf Claw
Storm Shield
Runic Armour
Wolf Tooth Necklace
Meltabombs
Saga of the Warrior Born

Rune Priest
Murderous Hurricane
Jaws of the World Wolf

ELITES

Wolf Guard, Powerfist, CombiMelta
Wolf Guard, Powerfist, CombiMelta
Wolf Guard, Powerfist, CombiMelta
Wolf Guard, Thunderhammer, CombiMelta

5 x Wolf Scouts
Meltagun

TROOPS

7 Grey Hunters
Meltagun
Mark of Wulfen
Wolf Standard
Rhino APC

7 Grey Hunters
Meltagun
Mark of Wulfen
Wolf Standard
Rhino APC

7 Grey Hunters
Meltagun
Mark of Wulfen
Wolf Standard
Rhino APC

5 Grey Hunters
Meltagun
Rhino APC

FAST ATTACK

10 Fenrisian Wolves

HEAVY SUPPORT

6 Long Fangs
5 Missile Launchers
Pack Leader

As you can see its my standard list with the addition of the Thunderwolves and some Fenrisian wolves to soak up wounds. I have included the Wolf Scouts this time round because I missed them so much last time it hurt bad, I also have a spare Wolf Guard floating around. Depending on the mission and opponent he can either go into the Wolf Scout unit or attach to the fourth Grey Hunter unit to make them more resilient.

I am aware this list lacks in Long range fire support with only one pack of Long Fangs but I like to play aggressively and enjoy the close combat phase so I am playing to my strengths I guess.

Stand by for a series of Battle Reports in the upcoming weeks and wish me luck Wolf Brothers!

Having a look through your list, I noticed some needless redundancy in your first Wolf Lord. He has Runic Armour and a Wolf Tail Talisman, both offer a 5+ save against Psychic attacks so you could drop the WTT if you wanted at no loss to yourself, or if you want to use more points elsewhere lose the Runic Armour and keep the WTT which leaves you on 3+/3++ instead of 2+/3++ but saves you 15pts.

Otherwise, good luck in the competition, I'm very curious to hear how the list works out.

Your not quite correct there mate, The Runic Armour offers a 5+ Inv save against WOUNDS caused by a psychic attack whils the talisman nullifies Psychic POWERS on a 5+. Therefore if I dropped the Talisman the Runic armour would do diddly squat against things like Lash etc.

Thanks for the feedback though even if I wantged to change I cant at this stage as this list has been submitted ;)

oooh, I hadn't noticed that, thanks for pointing that out!

That's quite a subtle difference, I wonder which works out as being the most useful?

Curious to see how it all works out. Looks like a good list. Why did you run a rhino w/ your 5 man grey hunter squad instead of a razorback. I would think with the razorback you could add a small boost to your long(er) range fire.

I would highly suggest you lose the Thunder hammer and go the frost axe route for an I5 character. Hitting on 3s and wounding on 2s vs most of the armies is sweet (especially if they never get to hit back). If you are monster hunting add beast slayer though I would most likely throw in the Wolfkin saga for the rerolls (and maybe a couple more Wolves to the pack). Lose the Storm Shield on the next Lord add in a second claw and the Belt of Russ. After that be prepared to watch as your enemy feverishly tries to bring down that dynamic duo! Good hunting.

@Will, I run a Rhino because thats the pack my Rune Priest rides with so I want a top Hatch to shoot out of.

@ Anon,
No changes to my list I'm afraid as its already submitted, besides I've done numerous tests and I think my set up is better ;)

(anonymous now signed in)Point taken and the build is truly to the tastes of the general. Looking forward to the coming Batreps with this army. By the way, where did you get your Thunderwolves? I got mine from Mr Dandy here stateside.

Yea, runic armour gives you a 5+ invul vs psychic wounds... Id prefer my Storm shield save any day of the week. Double lord is nails! you have the 2 best lords in the codex right here. Treat them as indestructible. just throw them into absolutely anything. You suffer from lack of range tho, I guess its not a problem with all those rhinos with 2 melta's inside. Wolf scouts are very plain. Id always russle up at least a motw in there... with the WG aswell. makes them very handy. Fenris wolves are what they are. Quick but they do die. Id make sure that you shake off as many wolves before you get into combat. 1st turn charges vs bikes or normal TWC will probably end up with you losing combat and being escorted from the board. Other all tho mate you should have fun with this! Im trying less shooty more CC but I cant leave my value fangs at home. But at the same time I cant leave my Lord at home atm! He is even in my 750 doubles army! (i run the TH/SS thunderlord and he is simply, the man!) Good luck. You going to OGC in sept still? is this what you are taking?
