GoatBoy from Bell of Lost Souls has won Adepticon with a Space Wolves version of his 'Space Goats' army.Over the weekend he faced Black Templars, Tau and Khorne armies, avoiding the vast number of Imperial Guard armies at the tournament.
Let's take a look at his Space Wolves army list and see what we think:
GoatBoy's 1850 points Space Wolves army list
Wolf Lord, Thunder Wolf, Runic Armour, Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer, Saga of the Bear, 2 Fenrisian Wolves
Wolf Lord, Thunder Wolf, Runic Armour, Storm Shield, Powerfist, Wolftail Necklace, Saga of the Wolfkin, 2 Fenrisian Wolves
Wolf Lord, Thunder Wolf, Runic Armor, Storm Shield, Frost Axe, Saga of the Warrior, 2 Fenrisian Wolves
10 Grey Hunters, 2 melta guns, mark of the wulfen + Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, 2 melta guns, mark of the wulfen + Rhino
10 Grey Hunters, 2 melta guns, mark of the wulfen + Rhino
15 Fenrisian Wolves
6 Long Fangs with 5 missile launchers
6 Long Fangs with 3 heavy bolters and 2 lascannons
HOW IT WORKS:
Basically the 3 Wolf lords join the Fenrisian Wolf pack and thunder up the field, closely followed by the Grey Hunters who melta gun things while the Long Fangs provide long ranged support.
I quite like the idea of creating a single Uber Unit to smack down anything that opposes you, but that's a lot of points tied up in 1 big mob. Fortunately it's very fast moving!
However, with this list costing 350pts more than the standard English tournament list of 1500pts, I've still got my eye on Alex Harrison's Space Wolves grand tournament army. Heaven knows what Alex could come up with if given an extra 350pts to play around with!
For as long as anyone can remember, US tournament have always involved more points than the UK ones. As a result, we have to be more conservative with our points spending in the UK, while in the US the bigger, more expensive and more powerful units are far more common. In the UK these units tend to only appear if they're completely cost effective and don't draw too much away from the cohesion of the army as a whole. Or if they do, some very careful playing is needed with only a handful of Troops to claim or contest strategic points.

I certainly like this army, but it suffers against a lot of the armies out there. Eldar would find this army easy, as would lash & guard. Im suprised at the armies he face. Teplars & Khorne? Tier 3 armies to say the least. I'm very suprised, btu ofcourse his tactical capabilites braught him through. Iw ould certainly have trouble in a UK enviroment, Lash bieng the main problem. Lash folowed by 6 plasma cannons would certainly get rid of those wolves & with no psychic defense (bar a wolf tail), he would certainly ofd had problems against certain lists. Psychic choir + ratling snipers o.o?
Its a big eggs in one basket approach, which seems to have worked, so congrats to goatboy. I wouldn't expect it to work here in the UK.
As for an extra 350pts, for me, I would get 5 wolf guard with combi-meltas in a drop pod (150pts), Vindicator with dozer (120pts) and another speeder (70pts) with 10 pts to play with.
The combi-cide squad tends to pop a wagon/raider/any big gribly tank turn 1. Vindi draws fire power and provides an additional gun & the extra speeder gives me an extra long range melta weapon :).

Wow, that list is...boring. Three pretty similar wolf lords (Three???), three cookie-cutter melta-spam GH units, a pack of wolves whose sole purpose is to be a meat shield for the Lords, and two LF packs.
There is absolutely nothing in that list that I find the slightest bit interesting.
Further evidence that I have no business even thinking about attending an official tournament, never mind playing in one.

Congrats to Goatboy, looks like you did well.
That being said this army just irks me. He's not playing Space Wolves, he's playing Chaos Space Marines with Space Wolves rules. Way I see it, use the rules for the army you're gonna play. What sense would it make for me to use the new BA rules for Tau? It wouldn't. I guess I'm just getting sick of seeing lists like this. I don't mind a model or two being "counts as" in a friendly game but come on, this is just too much.
Sorry about that, rant done.

Actually I think it's brilliant! He'd created a unique force that can use virtually any Space Marine or Chaos Marine Codex.

How do you figure that? C:SM doesn't have any Beasts/Cavalry units, and that's what TWC and FW units are. What "virtually any Space Marine" unit will he proxy with those models?

Then he can use other models.
He has a huge collection of various goat-beasts and goat-space marines to make any army.

This looks to be another case of player>army list. The list itself doesn't strike me as incredibly nasty; I don't see how he can keep even 21 virtually armourless wounds alive to shield the lords if they're eating fire from an entire army. The ubiquitous 'leafblower' lists he managed to dodge would be difficult I imagine; ask any guard player how easily a single 30 boy mob goes away under pie plates.
Goatboy obviously played it well however, and got some good match ups to seal the deal. Congratz to him (and may I say how jealous I am of the thunderhammer!)

Extremely so, to go to a big tourney and face a Black templars army, khorne & Tau (all tier 3 armies) Im very surprised. Id kill to play those at the GT lol.

I'm not against creativity in the hobby, I like that he can make some cool conversions and use them for multiple armies. However, I think it's odd when I see Chaos armies doing the counts-as thing to become Imperial. From a competitive stand-point, do whatever you want to get the W, I guess. But as for making an army, I'd feel ashamed to run my Wolves as CSM when they get their next dex.
