Big Jims 2000 point Space Wolves GT list

Hello to all the faithful readers of the Space Wolves Blog, I know it’s been a while since I regularly posted here. That is about to rapidly change, as I have decided to jump back into the tournament scene, and am planning to attend the Ragnarok GT (very fitting) in San Francisco.

I have two choices of armies to take with me. My Chaos Marines which to be competitive I have to use an I army I would dislike or get off my backside and get enough of my new Space Wolves done to meld with my existing army of Wolves.

There are many conversions to do, so I figure I may have to dip into the old army for a few things. I plan on attempting to build and paint a completely new force, but can still rely on my 15 year old Space Wolf army for many things.

This 2000 point Space Wolves force will be a blending my fluffy side with my competitive side. It can be tough for me to really create a hard tourney list since I am a big time casual, themed battle type of hobbyist. I always seem to muddy the waters with something background oriented. With that said I think this list blends the two concepts nicely.

As a huge fan of Thunder from Fenris, I must use a unit of Thunderwolf Cavalry.

The Long Fangs are armed the way that they are because the configuration has been a staple of my Space Wolf armies for 15 years. I know there are more optimal load-outs and I’ll be open to changing one units if you can make a good case for doing so.

The Wolf Guard will be parceled out to the Grey Hunters and Wolf Scouts.

Ready for a good case?
The heavy bolters are nice, but useless against vehicles. trade them for missile launchers, use the small blast if you need to deal with infantry. even on units with 3+ or 2+ saves, my missile launchers have always made their points back. You obviously take your lascannons because you deal with a lot of heavy armour, so I won't comment on those.

Nice looking list Jim, only thing I would suggest is Wolf Standards on your two larger packs of Grey Hunters at least, they are so worth the 10 points cost.

Bradimus is absolutely right, those things are amazing. I'm interested to see how you model your thunderwolf cavalry, perhaps you could write up an article on that?

Thanks for the feedback.

slxiii, I understand what you are saying, but with split fire the Hvy Bolters never fail me. Plus they make for good first casualties.

I could easily swap out the second packs load-out with 5 missile launchers, but the first squad is modeled and will stay as is.

Bradimus, Yeah I have been trying to figure out how to squeeze a couple of the Wolf Standards in. I am just not sure what to drop to get then in the list.

Keep the feedback coming!

Big Jim I like the list a lot.

I can see what it does and it does it well. If I could come with some suggestions I would try to ditch the one melltabomb on the 1 thunderwolf. (5 str 5 rending attacks on the charge aint so bad, and besides you have 4 str 10 fist attacks.) For the 5 points give your wolf lord a shield instead of a belt. Shure he looses one attack but when you invest 225 points in something you hate to see it die when rolling a 3 and thinking "I should have bought that shield." If he is riding with the thunderwolf cavalary it could be worth putting 20 points into some wolves just to "dodge" the 2 first lascannon shots.

I agree, heavy bolters is the right stuff, and they are only 2 points more then a "wolf guard soaker". They usualy go around the same time as the split fire function when they get shot at so it should be OK. I would suggest getting points to make 1 of the missile launchers a plasma canon. If he has a good field of fire nothing is gonne deepstrike in and spend a turn shooting. They will always spend a turn running.

Cut the 2 power weaponds from the big grey hunter packs. The I4 Attacks always get allocated on a) the same model or b) the mark of the wulfen model. With those 30 points get 2 banners and upgrade the one missile launcher to a plasma canon. (Mind always place him so that they do not lose unit coherency if he dies.) The banners are amasing. Rerolling armour saves and the mark of the wolfen and power fist attacks that roll 1 on the damadge being the moast "feel good" moments. Just my thoughts.

PS: Is the exstra armour on the rhino all that good? Cut it for wolves perhaps. (The lord and the cavalary only needs to live through the inicial turn of shooting. After that they are usualy in mellee.)

Very solid list. As far as how you could get 20 points for two wolf standards, maybe you could drop the runic armor on your wolf lord or use a wolf guard battle leader instead. The battle leader couldn't use the belt of russ, but you could use a wolf claw and storm shield (which is the setup I use).

Or alternatively you could downgrade a couple of your wolf guard power fists to power weapons. I'm normally all for the wolf guard power fists, but the guys with combi-plasmas in the small squads may not need them.

Any of those changes may be worth two wolf standards or not, depending on how you plan to use the units in question tactically. In my opinion, it'll be a solid list in any case.

Good hunting, brother.

I'm interested to see what Big Jim comes up with. I've got a cracking Thunderwolf conversion planned. It's just finding the time to do it!

Jim, what are you going to use for the Thunder wolves?

Thanks again for the great input!

I think I will dump the Power weapons on the big GH packs so I can get them each a Wolf Banner and give the Wolf Lord a Stormshield.

I’ll keep the extra armor on the Rhinos as I want the big packs to be moving as often as possible.

I have a couple of conversion ideas for the Thunderwolf mounts, but it is tough coming up with an appropriate GW wolf/model for the project. I may just bite the bullet and do conversions based on Canis like Dave Taylor did.

I right with you Adam on the time issue for getting stuff done. So much to do and so little free time to do it in.

Thanks,
