1000 Points Space Wolves Army

I needed a 1000 points Space Wolves army for the Vapnartak tournament in York on the 7th of February. Both Brad and I would be representing the Space Wolves in the once Viking city of Jorvic (now called York), which was once ruled over by the mighty Erik Bloodaxe. Such an epic setting would be more than suitable for our first tournament with the new Space Wolves army.

Monstrous creatures would be slain, foaming ale quaffed by the flaggon and buxom wenches beckoned forth bearing a hearty helping of piping hot steak. Heck, we might even play some Warhammer 40K amidst the whole event!

As you can see, I've just finished painting my first Long Fangs squad and I've been making great progress on my Grey Hunters. The bad news is that I have three weeks to build and paint 3 Rhinos, 1 Razorback, 3 Wulfen, 6 Grey Hunters, 1 Wolfguard and 2 Rune Priests. This is going to be tight, so pack and company markings can wait.

1000 points space wolves army for Vapnartak

Each Rune Priest joins a Grey Hunter squad. I haven't decided what Psychic powers to give them, although Jaws of the World Wolf, Living Lighting and Murderous Hurricane look tasty.

Rune Priest: 115pts
Saga of the Beast Slayer
Wolftail Talisman

Rune Priest: 115pts
Chooser of the Slain
Wolftail Talisman

Grey Hunter Pack: 188 points
Wolf Guard with combi-melta, powerfist
5 Grey Hunters, melta gun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard
Rhino APC

Grey Hunter Pack: 188 points
Wolf Guard with combi-melta, powerfist
5 Grey Hunters, melta gun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard
Rhino APC

Grey Hunter Pack: 188 points
Wolf Guard with combi-melta, powerfist
5 Grey Hunters, melta gun, mark of the wulfen, wolf standard
Rhino APC

Long Fangs Pack: 215 points
1 Squad Leader, 5 Long Fangs with Missile Launchers
Razorback Transport with twin linked lascannon

THE PLAN

Rhinos go forward, Long Fangs sit back, chaos ensues. I think that's a simple strategy.

How defensive, aggressive or even reactive the army is will depend entirely upon my opponents army. I have some ideas about how to play the army, but ultimately my lack of battlefield experience is going to be a problem. I doubt I'll even get a practice game in with this before the 7th of February. I may even be painting through the night and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

But, there's nothing quite like a baptism of fire to teach you how to play your army. With 4 games in 1 day, the fire is going to be particularly hot!

So you've got 2 Rhinos that are carrying 7 models (5 grey hunters, 1 WG and 1 Rune Priest, but your third Rhino only carries 6 models (1 WG and 5 Grey hunters). Sure you don't wanna make that last Rhino a Razorback for 5 pts?
Also, wut about replacing the Razorback in your Long Fang squad with a WG + Cyclone Missile Launcher. Better use of Points for the squad?
And if you did both these things, then lack of models should not be a problem, because you could give the Long Fang's Razorback to the 3rd Grey Hunter squad, and then take the WG you have shown in ur picture...and it's one less Rhino to paint.

Heads up for your Space Wolf community Adam:

http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m800008a_FAQ_SpaceWolves_Jan2010

The Furious Charge/Counter Attack ruling has been reversed to, quite rightly, put it in line with the clear wording of the Counter Attack USR in the Rule Book

I would comment on the list but it would be unfair as I am the organiser.

I can't view that on my crappy home PC. I'll take a look at work early tomorrow morning.

As for the feedback on my list, I take it that's a subtle way of saying my list could be better. Well, I don't give a damn. I'm gonna have a bash with it. I'm more worried about it all being finished in time.

JACOB:

Yes, I could make that last rhino a razorback and I shall think about that.

Unfortunately, I can't give the Long Fangs a Wolfguard with a heavy weapon, because you must have at least 5 Wolfguard in your army to be able to do that.

No I wasn't saying anything about your list, subtle or otherwise.

Total impartiality.

I Like the list, it's different to most and will cause people a few problems because there are a lot of targets in there and if you want to use it go for it - but if I was facing it I'd be relatively happy as there isn't anything in there to scare me once the long fangs are taken care of.
Target priorities against you would be get rid of the fangs and depending on my list either the razorback or make your squads walk across the board. You also don't have anything to worry a Land Raider at range.
7 and 6 man SM squads tend to be quite fragile and once they are down your rune priests die very quickly.

As for Rune priest powers, with two I'd be tempted to have two lots of Living Lightning and then one with Murderous Hurricane, (it made me chuckle watching an Ork player have to roll 20 odd dice 3 times when he wanted to attack my priest with his mob of boyz!), the other with JOTWW although this has never worked for me it scares so many people.

Hi, I like the list, but at 1000pts, I think that you are really limiting yourself with a lot of the wargear you have on some of those units. With only 6 models, if your GH's get into combat, you are going to be struggling against any sort of dedicated assault unit/MC. I like the two rune priests, and I would second the suggestion to get a RB in place of the rhino you have. However, I would also be tempted to get some plasma action on one of those squads instead of the melta - just in case some terminators pop up (down?) in the middle of your force.

Here is something that I am planning to run in a 1000 point tourney in my local store; see what you think!

Rune priest (M.hurricane; LL)

5 GH's in rhino with MG

5 GH's in HB razorback with MG

Lone wolf with TDA, 'Shield and Chainfist

2x Dakka predator (AC/HB)

3x Landspeeder Typhoon

Long fangs with 5xML

I think that if we got paired, I'd have a fair chance of taking out your guns before mine, although if you did get close, I would suffer?

Hope you found some of that useful!

Tony

Looks pretty solid, but I'm not going to paint that in 2 weeks!
