I've got painting Space Wolves down to a tee now. My method is relatively quick and very clean. Well, quick for my perfectionist standards anyway.James gave me some great tipis about gluing the bolt gun into the space marine's hands AFTER painting. I've taken a similar philosophy to the back pack, as leaving this off lets me highlight the rear details of the model more comfortably.
Once I've made some more progress with the army I'll do a painting guide for Space Wolves, Dreadnoughts and pretty much all the essentials that are going into this army.
Considering the sheer fear of taking on the drop pod kit, I'll probably do a drop pod assembly and painting guide, as the two very much go hand it hand from what I can see so far.
Back to the Space Wolf I've been painting: I painted the bolt gun and back packs base colours separately, then stuck the components into place before applying the highlights. You'll notice that I've broken with tradition and painted the bolter the same colour as the Space Wolf armour. I just feel that it's much more uniform, keeps in with the 'legion' feel of the Space Marines and stops the model from looking too colourful.
Now that I'm older I view the Games Workshop ranges as military miniatures, not colourful comic book heroes. While Warhammer 40K falls into both categories, I feel that Games Workshop needs to continue with its more sensible real life inspired colour schemes instead of the circus that 2nd edition armies resembled. This is war after all, not a fashion parade.
Enough for now...back to the painting table.

He's looking good so far! I understand where you are coming from on the toning the colors down thing. I'm not sold on the Bolter casing, but I'll reserve judgment until I see the finished product.

Very smooth textures on the power armor! It almost looks as if you didn't paint the original grey plastic at all, it's that smooth. As for the bolter - I think maybe a dash of color (maybe painting the casing black) would help break up the solid block of color the current scheme presents to the eye.

I very much look forward to the guides in the future. At some point I am sure that I will get myself a Space Wolf army as well (waiting for the codex) and all the help I can get I will take :)
I like a good gray color on the Wolfs, but I find it ironic how closely yours match the color of the plastic. Does it look as similar "in person" so to speak or is it different?
You could try to same weapon color that I am using for my Imperial Fists. I paint them black and then ever so lightly brush on a metal color. Would break off from the gray, but hardly be called colorful and cheery. Pretty simple too :)
I'm looking forward to seeing them in packs :)

Flekko - They don't look plastic grey in real life. Because of the extra Chaos Black in the Codex Grey they have a subtle blue tint.

I'll never get it why one would glue on backpacks and Bolters after painting.
Of course, you have the benefit of being able to paint the details better. However, unless you want to have your glue sit on a layer of paint, you have to sand off the paint again, glue the plastic and repaint the bare parts. That's too much of a hassle for me, so I glue on everything right from the start. As my shop owner says: "If you can't reach it with a brush, you can't see it either."
Or how do you solve this problem?

I take a small bit of paint off with a knife, then glue together.

A blue tint sounds very nice. Gives it a nice calm gray. Keep up the good work!
A tip for those wanting to do paint -> assemble. Get some "Mascara Liquida" from Vallejo's model color range. It's number 523. It's some kind of rubber latex (they call it Liquid Frisket) that you simply paint on the areas where you are going to glue, then when you have painted just scrape it off (comes off real easy) and off you go. Also good if you are going to paint transparent pieces of plastic like canopies and don't fully trust your less than steady hands.

Anyone any thoughts on converting the limited ed techmarine into an iron priest? Anyone attempted this b4?

I think I'll wait to see what the new Iron Priest comes with in terms of weapon options.
